Location the Aventine is one of the seven hills on which Rome was founded, the further South. It is a hill of trapezoidal shape more or less steep slopes, which comes close to the Tiber. Among the seven hills was the most isolated and most difficult access. Eastward, over a saddle, is linked to another small hill, called "Piccolo Aventino". Its maximum height is 43 m a.s.l. According to ancient sources the name may derive from that of one of the Kings of Alba Longa, son of Hercules, or locutions ab adventu hominum which was the name of a temple dedicated to Diana, or ab advectu to the marshes around him, or still, according to Plutarch, from ab avibus for birds that we were moving from the Tiber to deliver greetings to Remo or for oats that grew and which trade in the valley below. The area was divided into a "Aventine" real, between the Tiber River and the Valley in which arose the Circo Massimo and "Aventine" (presently "San Saba"). In Republican times both sectors within the servian walls seem to have been included in the heading "Aventine", but with the city in 14 regions of the Augustan Division were divided between regions XIII (then Aventinus), XII (public swimming pool).
